Suspended sub-inspector Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan, the prime accused in a case filed over torturing a person named Raihan Ahmed to death at the Bandar Bazar outpost of Sylhet Kotwali police, allegedly went into hiding after getting released from jail on August 11 on bail.
Public prosecutor at the Sylhet district judge court Ashique Uddin told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the Sylhet Metropolitan Judge Court was supposed to hold a hearing in the case on Wednesday in the presence of the charge-sheeted accused, but Akbar did not appear before the court in defiance of a High Court order.
He said that Akbar was released from the Sylhet Central Jail on August 11 after the HC granted him bail in the case.
‘Later, on August 14, the Chamber Judge’s Court of the HC curtailed his bail period and ordered him to surrender to the lower court concerned within next 10 days, but he has so far not appeared before the court,’ Ashique said in the afternoon on Wednesday.
He, however, said that the court hearing was not held Wednesday due to the absence of the judge.
‘September 14 has been set for the next date of hearing in the case,’ the public prosecutor said.
Raihan, 34, hailed from Hawlader Para in Akhalia area in the city, was tortured to death at the Bandar Bazar police outpost in the early hours of October 11, 2020, reportedly after police failed to realise Tk 10,000 from his family in bribe.
His wife Tahmina Akter Tanni filed a murder case with the Kotwali police station on the following day.
Later, on May 5 in 2021, Police Bureau of Investigation’s Sylhet office inspector Awlad Hossain, also investigation officer in the case, submitted the charge-sheet to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court against five police personnel, including Akbar, and Abdullah Al Mamun, claimed to be a reporter of an online news portal.
Other charge-sheeted accused are the police outpost’s suspended sub-inspector Hasan Uddin, assistant SI Ashek-e Elahi, constables Titu Chandra Das and Harunur Rashid.
Four charge-sheeted cops, except Ashek-e Elahi, were granted bails by the High Court between February and August in 2025.
Mamun, a resident of Companiganj upazila in the district, has remained absconding since filing the case.
The investigation officer of the case stated in the charge-sheet that direct involvement of Akbar and Ashek, constable Titu and Harunur in torturing Raihan to death in the police outpost were found during the investigation, sources in the court said.
He also mentioned that suspended SI Hasan with the help of Mamun had removed the video footage from the CCTV of the Bandar Bazar police outpost in an effort to hide the evidence of torturing Raihan.
The Sylhet Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court formed the charges in the case on September 18, 2022, in the presence of the five cops, the court sources said.
