
Three people, including a Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader, were killed as two groups of villagers clash over a land dispute at Jamati village in Sadar upazila of Netrakona between Saturday night and Sunday.
The deceased are Dujahan Mia, 55, a former member of Mougati Union Parishad and a local BNP leader, Nur Mohammad, 28, son of Abdul Kader, and Rafique Mia of the village.
Kazi Shahnewaz, officer-in-charge of Netrakona model police station, said that Amzad, a resident of the village took Tk 5 lakh from Dujahan with a promise to sell a piece of land to him two years back.
Both Amzad and Dujahan had been at loggerheads over the issue. At around 9:00pm Saturday, a group of miscreants stabbed Dujahan indiscriminately while he was returning to his home from the party office, leaving him dead on the spot.
As soon as the news spread, the supporters of Dujahan along with lethal weapons carried out attack on the houses of Amzad gong at around 10:30pm, leaving Nur Mohammad and Rafique Mia iunjured.
Later, they were taken to a local hospital where the doctors declared Nur Mohammad dead.
Rafique was shifted to Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital for better treatment where he died to his injuries Sunday morning.
Sajal Kumar Sarkar, superintendent of Netrakona Sadar Circle, said that efforts were on to arrest the attackers.
