The authorities of Bangladesh Agricultural University on Sunday announced the closure of the university for an indefinite period after students confined over 200 teachers, including the vice-chancellor, of the university on the campus for about six hours, demanding a combined degree for two faculties.

The teachers got free from the confinement after some outsiders attacked the students and a clash took place between the two groups.

The authorities also ordered all students to vacant halls by 9:00am today.

With the same demand, students of the Patuakhali Science and Technology University enforced a ‘complete shutdown’ at Babuganj campus, one of the two campuses of the university, in Barishal on Sunday.

Students of veterinary science and animal husbandry faculties from these two universities continued to protest, demanding integration of these two faculties.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Mymensingh reported that Bangladesh Agricultural University students from these two faculties confined vice-chancellor professor AK Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan and over 200 teachers at the Joynul Abedin auditorium at about 1:00pm by locking the door after an academic council meeting.

They confined the teachers as a decision was made at the meeting that the university would introduce the combined degree alongside separate degrees for the two faculties.

Protesting students said that they would enforce tough movement if their demand would not be met.

At about 7:00pm some outsiders attacked the protesting students allegedly with locally-made weapons.

As the students were dispersed the confined teachers came out of the auditorium at the time.

The university’s public relations and publications director (in charge), Mohammad Toufiqul Islam, said that the decision of closing the university for an indefinite period had been made at an urgent syndicate meeting held at about 9:30pm and all students were asked to vacant halls by 9:00am today.

It was decided that under the current circumstances, law and order at the university has been brought under the jurisdiction of the district administration, he added.

Kotwali police station officer-in-charge Md Shibirul Islam said that a clash between some outsiders and the students took place after Magrib prayers.

He said that during the clash they were present at the spot along with the Detective Branch police.

‘We could not identify the outsiders,’ the police official said, adding that at about 9:30pm, ‘tense situation is still prevailing at the campus.’

Students of the Patuakhali Science and Technology University held rally and procession, seeking combined degree for the two faculties.

The university vice-chancellor, professor Kazi Rafiqul Islam, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they had already formed a committee and the committee would submit its report to him today.

Mentioning that they all were positive about the demand of the students, the vice-chancellor said that after getting the report, he would call an academic council meeting to make the final decision.
