Jahangirnagar University’s hall union elections slated for next month with 102 candidates already declared winners unopposed and 63 posts remaining vacant, according to the final candidate list published on Friday night.
All together, the university’s 21 residential halls account for 315 positions, 15 in each.
Of these, 102 candidates face no rivals and will be officially declared elected, while no nominations were filed for 63 seats, leaving only 150 positions to be contested on the Election Day.
Female halls reported the bulk of uncontested wins, with 56 students elected without opposition, including vice-president and general secretary posts in several dormitories.
Nawab Faizunnesa Hall saw victory in six uncontested seats. It also has nine vacant posts, while the 13th girls’ hall recorded the highest shortfall with 12 of its 15 seats empty.
At the male halls, uncontested victories were more scattered, including nine in Shaheed Salam-Barkat Hall, eight in Rabindranath Tagore Hall, and smaller numbers in others.
Election commission member Professor Mafruhi Satter said that bye-elections might be required in halls that failed to form a quorum, such as the 13th Girls’ Hall where only three candidates were set to be elected.
The hall union polls will be held alongside the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union election on September 11 after 33 years. Campaigning began on Saturday and runs until September 9.
The university has an electorate of 11,919 students, with 6,102 male and 5,817 female.
