The authorities on Thursday announced that the elections to the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union and hall unions would be held on October 12.

The chief election commissioner for CUCSU polls, Professor Monir Uddin, announced the election schedule at a press conference at the Faculty of Social Sciences auditorium at 3:30pm.

The elections to CUCSU and hall unions are going to be held after 35 and a half years, as the last elections were held on February 8, 1990.

Addressing Thursday’s press conference, Professor Monir Uddin said that the draft voter list would be published on September 1, objections on the list would be received on September 4 and the final voter list would be published on September 11.

He said that the nomination forms would be distributed from September 14 and the aspirants would be able to submit their nomination papers until September 17.

The draft list of candidates will be published on September 21 after scrutiny of the nomination papers on September 18, he said.

He said that the withdrawal of the nomination papers would be allowed on September 23, objections regarding candidates would be received and resolved on September 24, and the final list of candidates would be published on September 25.

He said that the polling will be held between 9:00am and 4:00pm on October 12.

On August 1, the university syndicate approved a new CUCSU constitution, increasing the executive committee posts from 18 to 28, reducing the number of executive members from 10 to 5.

The maximum age limit for members and candidates would be 30 years.

Since its establishment in 1966, CU has managed to hold CACSU elections only six times, the last being on February 8, 1990.

Three more public universities, Dhaka University, Rajshahi University and Jahangirnagar University, are also heading for their students’ union elections in September.
