A knee injury sidelined country’s maiden South Asian Games gold-medal-winning fencer, Fatema Mujib, from the July Revolution Fencing Championship that begins at the Shaheed Captain M Mansur Ali National Handball Stadium today.
Bangladesh Navy fencer, Fatema, will be out of action for at least four months due to injury, confirmed Bangladesh Fencing Federation president Maj Gen (retd) Qamrul Islam during a press conference at the National Sports Council on Thursday.
Fatema came into the limelight when she won gold in the 2019 SA Games in Kathmandu. The injury also sidelined her from the ongoing national camp ahead of the 14th SA Games to be held in Pakistan in January 2026.
‘Fatema Mujib’s injury is unfortunate. She had a successful surgery at the CMH… She will need rest for at least four months, as the doctor said. The national training camp is going on, and we are trying to bring her back,’ Qamrul replied when he was asked about Fatema’s exclusion.
Nearly 175 men and women fencers from 18-team, including Bangladesh Army, Navy, Ansar and VDP, Border Guard Bangladesh, private universities and clubs from across the country will compete in the two-day-long competition.
However, there will be no team events, and the participants will compete in three – epee, sabre and foil – individual events.
