The Anti-Corruption Commission has launched a drive against Professor Sheikh Golam Mostafa, former director of the National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital, over allegations providing Tk 10 lakh in cash and four cheques worth Tk 200 crore to a student coordinator.

The drive began on Thursday afternoon led by ACC assistant director Nazmul Islam at NICRH office in Mohakhali and others related office, said ACC deputy director Md Akhtarul Islam.

He said that the allegations include abuse of power, amassing illegal wealth, and attempting to secure a top advisory post through bribery.

‘Details will be disclosed after the drive is completed,’ he added.

According to the complaint, in January this year Mostafa allegedly provided Tk 10 lakh in cash and four cheques worth Tk 200 crore to a coordinator (student coordinator) in the hope of being appointed as a health adviser.

During the transaction, one Ariful Islam acted as a mediator, identifying himself as the brother of coordinator Arefin.

He collected the cheques directly from Mostafa’s chamber, while Arefin himself was not present but communicated over the phone, said the allegations.
