MEMBERS of the Border Guard Bangladesh have arrested a Bangladeshi national with counterfeit Indian currency notes worth 5,04,000 rupees from the Maheshpur border area in Jhenaidah.
The arrested was identified as Waliar Sheikh, 37, a resident of Bagerhat Sadar upazila in Bagerhat.
Waliar鈥檚 five-year-old son, who was accompanying him at the time of his arrest, has been handed over to his family on humanitarian grounds.
According to a press release issued by BGB鈥檚 Maheshpur-58 Battalion, the arrest was made on Tuesday evening during a special operation in the Khosalpur border area.
Acting on a tip-off, a patrol team of BGB led by Naik Dinbandhu Roy intercepted Waliar near the border pillar 60/105 and recovered the fake notes.
BGB officials said that Waliar had been living in Bihar of India since 2014, working as a tailor. In 2017, he married a woman in Bihar鈥檚 Araria district. Investigations revealed that since 2022 he had been sourcing counterfeit Indian currency notes from a person, Maruf, in Bagerhat.
On Tuesday, he reportedly purchased 5,04,000 rupees in fake notes for Tk聽60,000 and was attempting to cross into India before being caught.
Maheshpur police station officer-in-charge Sajjadur Rahman said that a case was filed against Waliar, who had since been produced before court.
His son, however, was handed over to family members considering his age, the officials added.
