National Citizen Party convener Nahid Islam on Tuesday said that if the July Charter gets a legal basis, the party is ready for elections in February.

He came up with the remark while speaking to journalists at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka before a delegation of the NCP led by him left the country for a visit to China.

Nahid said, ‘We want elections for both a constituent assembly and parliament simultaneously through a legal basis to the July Charter.’

Stressing the urgency of providing a legal basis for the July Charter, he also said, ‘The sooner a legal foundation is given to the July Charter, the faster we can move towards the elections.’

‘If this task (providing the legal basis to the July Charter) can be completed by February, we are ready for elections in February,’ Nahid said.

Noting that no visible initiative has been taken regarding the July Charter, he said, ‘We have said if elections are held bypassing the July Charter, the elections will be questioned.’

The eight-member NCP delegation led by Nahid Islam and party member secretary Akhtar Hossain is going to China on Tuesday night on a six-day visit at the invitation of the Chinese government.

The NCP delegation is scheduled to return to Dhaka on August 31.
