Five-time Bangladesh Premier League champions, Bashundhara Kings, has appointed Argentine Mario Gomez as their new head coach, club president Imrul Hassan confirmed the news on Monday.
Kings were looking to sign Brazil’s Sergio Farias, who verbally agreed to join the club beforehand, but later joined Iraq’s Duhok FC.
The 68-year-old Gomez last coached Argentine second division club CA Talleres before joining Kings, who were without a head coach during their AFC Challenge League preliminary round match in India.
Gomez, who started his coaching career in 1995 as an assistant coach with Argentine club CA Lanus, has worked as an assistant coach for Italian giants Inter Milan and the Spanish top-flight club Valencia.
Gomez was on the dugout at Mallorca from 1997 to 1999, helping the club reach both the Copa del Rey and UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup finals. He also spent two seasons at Valencia, where the side played consecutive UEFA Champions League finals.
Gomez famously led Johor Darul Ta’zim to the 2015 AFC Cup title, the first Malaysian side to win a continental trophy, along with a domestic treble of league, FA Cup, and Charity Shield.
