At least 21 aspirants withdrew their nomination papers on Monday, the last day for withdrawing nominations in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union elections.

Chief returning officer professor Mohammad Zashim Uddin said this in the evening.

He told a press conference in the afternoon that students would be able to cast their votes by showing university identity cards, hall cards, library cards or pay-in slips to avoid complications.

He said that no major violation of the electoral code of conduct had so far been reported.

He said that a meeting with all candidates for the posts of vice-president, general secretary and assistant general secretary would be held at the Senate building at 11:00am on Tuesday to discuss the code of conduct.

The election commission also made it clear that the elections would be held in eight polling centres and the number would not increase.

The elections to DUCSU and hall unions are scheduled for September 9.

On Monday, the university administration took several key decisions regarding the DUCSU and hall union elections.

Students who wish not to display their photographs in the voter list have been asked to submit applications to the chief returning officer by August 27, according to a press release issued by the university’s public relations office.

In the female dormitories, non-resident candidates of the respective halls, as well as resident and non-resident candidates from other female halls, will be allowed to conduct election campaigns from 10:00am to 10:00pm between August 26 and September 7, the release added.

Nomination papers that had earlier been cancelled on various grounds were declared valid after scrutiny on Monday.

The university authorities on Monday held a meeting with top representatives of the law enforcement agencies to ensure overall campus security and safety of polling centres ahead of the elections.

The meeting, held at the vice-chancellor’s office, was chaired by DU vice-chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan.

Umama Fatema, vice-president candidate from the ‘Independent Student Unity’ panel on the day apologised to Ruqayyah Hall authorities for staying at the hall Sunday night, in violation of rules that a female student of one hall cannot stay in another hall.

In her application to the hall authorities, Umama wrote that, due to prolonged mental and physical stress, she entered Rokeya Hall before 10:00pm on Sunday with one of her friends.

Abidul Islam Khan, vice-president candidate from Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal’s panel, at a press conference on Monday, alleged that the authorities were failing to ensure a level playing field.

Chhtra Odhikar Parishad president Bin Yamin Mollah at a press conference on the DU campus alleged that Chhatra Dal was not in favour of the DUCSU elections.

The Socheton Shikkharthi Songshod panel, supported by Islami Chhatra Andolan Bangladesh, at a press conference on Monday at Dhaka University’s Madhur Canteen, demanded a level playing field and alleged that wealthy and influential candidates were benefiting from the election commission’s weak oversight.
