Police have detained two suspected Rohingyas at Kamarkhand upazila in Sirajganj for their alleged attempts to obtain Bangladeshi national identity cards.

The upazila election officer, Masud Rana, and the upazila nirbahi officer, Anamika Nazrul, handed them over to police after they became suspicious when the individuals came to apply for national ID cards.

A case was filed against them on Monday afternoon under the illegal immigration act with the Kamarkhanda police station.

The two detainees are identified as Rokeya Begum, 27, and Anis, 40. They claimed them as husband and wife, said Abdur Rob, sub-inspector of the Kamarkhand police station.

The couple fled from Camp-12 G-4 at Ukhiya at Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar and came to Kamarkhanda in Sirajganj, where they attempted to obtain national ID cards illegally, he said.

Bangladesh is hosting more than 12 lakh Rohingyas, nearly 7.5 lakh of whom have fled the Myanmar military crackdown in Rakhine in 2017.

Abdur Rob also said, ‘During a preliminary interrogation, they admitted to be Rohingyas.’

‘Police will investigate further. The process of sending them to court is under way,’ he added.

Upazila election officer Masud Rana said, ‘At about 11:00am on Sunday, Rokeya Begum came to the Kamarkhanda election office with fake documents to be registered as a voter. Her name, address and language raised suspicions, which were reported to the district election officer and the UNO.’
