A weeklong arts exhibition began at the fine arts faculty of Rajshahi University on Saturday, showcasing nearly 200 artworks by students.
Vice-chancellor professor Saleh Hasan Naqib inaugurated the exhibition at a ceremony as chief guest about noon.
Organised by the painting, oriental art and printmaking department, around 160 students from different departments are participating in the exhibition, displaying works capturing the country’s scenic nature and people in their livelihood, love, joy and sorrow, and also contemporary social and political issues.
The artworks in their style also reflect a blend of folk traditions and modernity, offering a striking aesthetic harmony.
Professor Saleh Hasan Naqib at the inauguration said that art distinguishes humans from other living beings as aesthetics and creativity were only exist in human beings.
He, however, expressed disappointment that the faculty still lacked a full-fledged gallery despite nearly four decades had passed since its establishment.
‘We will soon take initiatives to build a gallery,’ he assured.
Pro-vice-chancellor (academic) Professor Farid Uddin Khan said that fine arts remained one of the prime attractions of the university.
‘Behind each artwork is the relentless effort of our students, whose creativity will flourish further in the future,’ he hoped.
Fine arts faculty dean Professor Mohammad Ali, pro-vice-chancellor (administration) professor Main Uddin, registrar professor Iftekharul Alam Masud, and public relations office administrator Professor Akhtar Hossain Majumdar addressed the opening event with painting, oriental art and printmaking department chair Professor Boni Adam presiding.
The exhibition will end on August 28.
