The police on Saturday urged the political parties to avoid busy city roads to hold rallies at alternative venues not to cause public sufferings during their political programmes, including those centring the upcoming national elections.Â
Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali made the call while addressing leaders from 32 political parties and alliances at a views-exchange meeting held at the Bangladesh Police Auditorium in the capital’s Rajarbagh, said a DMP press release.
He said that 91 alternative venues – 15 in Motijheel, 12 in Tejgaon, 17 in Lalbagh, 14 in Wari, eight in Gulshan, 11 in Mirpur, 10 in Uttara, and four in Ramna – have been proposed for political gatherings across Dhaka to reduce public sufferings.Â
‘When roads are blocked, pregnant women and critically ill patients cannot reach hospitals on time, and examinees fail to arrive at examination centres punctually. Such situations must be avoided, he said.
Highlighting the preparations for the upcoming national polls, the DMP commissioner said that the highest number of police personnel will be deployed during the election.
Political leaders also urged the law enforcement to remain alert against any attempts at violence centring the election.
