Rubya Haider, Nishita Akter, and Sumaiya Akter made the cut as the Bangladesh Cricket Board announced a 15-member squad for the forthcoming ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup on Saturday.
Wicketkeeper-batter Rubya, off-spinner Nishita, and top-order batter Sumaiya replaced Dilara Akter, Jannatul Ferdus Sumona, and Ishma Tanjim, respectively, in the squad that played the World Cup Qualifier in April.Ìý
Rubya, who previously represented Bangladesh in T20Is, is yet to play an ODI. She received her first World Cup call-up following a period of consistent development with the bat and behind the stumps.Ìý
Chief selector of the BCB women’s wing Sazzad Ahmed said that Rubya’s development in the past six months had been outstanding.Ìý
He said, ‘Rubya has earned her place through sheer hard work. Her development over the last six months has been outstanding. We see her as a valuable option both as a reserve keeper and a backup opener.’
Nishita, the youngest member of the squad at 17, had made her international debut in 2023 during the ODI series against Pakistan. She has played two WODIs so far.Ìý
‘Nishita is still young, but she bowls with great maturity. She is consistent and calm under pressure, and her ability to contain left-handers gave her an edge. We believe this experience will serve her well and add depth to our spin attack,’ Sazzad said on Nishita’s selection.Ìý
Another notable inclusion in the squad was the former Bangladesh Under-19 captain Sumaiya, who had played her only ODI against Australia in March last year.Ìý
According to Sazzad, Sumaiya was on the selector’s radar.
‘Sumaiya has been knocking on the door for some time. She brings the ability to occupy the crease and accelerate when needed. With her skill set and fielding standards, she gives us an all-round option in the top order,’ he said.
Bangladesh will play their first match against Pakistan in Colombo on October 2 before playing two warm-ups against Sri Lanka.Ìý
