Chittagong Port Authority is constantly increasing yards and sheds as part of its regular capacity expansion.
In the past one year, several yards have been renovated and new yards are being constructed, said a statement on Thursday.
Already, new yards have been constructed in the old auction yard, car storage area, baggage shed, X-Y shed areas.
As a result of the expansion of all these yards along with the old 53,518 TEUs, the current capacity of Chittagong Port has increased to about 59,000 TEUs. Therefore, it is currently possible to store more containers in Chittagong Port than before, mentioned the statement. 聽
Despite the recent storage of about 47 or 48 thousand TEUS containers, the operational activities of port are being completed very smoothly. Whereas earlier, an average of 10 container ships was handled at port every day, currently up to 12 to 13 container ships are being handled.
This will enable importers and exporters to recaeive their products in a much shorter time than before and the export lead time is decreasing. In addition, several more yard constructions will be completed this year.
This will increase the container storage capacity of Chittagong Port to about 62,000 TEUS.
Due to sufficient yard capacity, about 6,000 TEUS export-oriented containers have been pre-stacked at the port yard. However, due to the locomotive crisis of Bangladesh Railway, the number of containers going to Dhaka ICD has increased.
Efforts are being made to ease this by constantly communicating with Bangladesh Railway.
The statement also mentioned that currently, the waiting time of ships at the outer anchorage had come down to 0-2 days.
On Thursday, 4 container ships and 1 GI ship are waiting for berthing at the outer anchorage. The average position of the ship is currently 2.58 days.
Due to the increase in operational capacity of Chittagong Port and significant progress in聽other indicators, port聽traders are currently receiving faster and better services, mentioned the statement.
