The Patuakhali Bar Association has suspended the membership of the public prosecutor at the district’s Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal as he allegedly attempted to bribe a judge to grant bail to an accused in a case of raping the daughter of a July uprising martyr. Â
In a written complaint filed on Wednesday, Judge Nilufar Shirin stated that public prosecutor Ruhul Amin Sikder sent her a WhatsApp message requesting bail for the second accused, Shahabuddin Munshi, 55, in the case, and later sent an envelope containing Tk 50,000 along with case documents to her residence Tuesday night.
The complaint further alleged that Ruhul had earlier lobbied on behalf of accused persons in different cases and often contacted journalists when court orders went against his will.
Following the judge’s complaint, the Patuakhali District Bar Association convened an emergency meeting Thursday afternoon and suspended Ruhul’s primary membership, said the bar association president Humayun Kabir.Â
The association also issued him a show-cause notice, asking for an explanation within seven working days, he said.
He said that a copy of the resolution, along with Ruhul’s written reply, would be forwarded to the district commissioner, the Anti-Corruption Commission, the law ministry, and the Chief Justice’s office.Â
Denying the allegations, Ruhul said, ‘Since I am a public prosecutor, various conspiracies are being hatched against me. I am not involved in this incident.’
Ruhul, a member of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Patuakhali district unit, contested the 2025 district bar association election from the party’s panel.
Former district Jamaat secretary and current Shura member ABM Saifullah said, ‘We are aware of the matter. If the allegations are proven, actions will certainly be taken.’ Â
