Senior secretary to the public administration ministry Md Mokhlesur Rahman on Friday said that the Sadapathar tourist spot at Companiganj in Sylhet would be brought under CCTV surveillance.

He also said that stern action would be taken against those who were involved in the widespread looting of stones from the popular tourist spot in Bholaganj area at the upazila.


He came up with the remarks in response to reporters’ queries in the morning while he was inspecting the Sadapathar tourist spot.

‘No one would be left outside the law, no matter how influential officials of the administration or leaders of political parties they are,’ Mokhlesur said. 

Meanwhile, Sylhet district unit of the Anti-Corruption Commission has sent a probe report to its headquarters in the capital Dhaka.

The report reportedly named 42 political leaders of different parties, administrative officials and businesses for their alleged involvement in the looting of the Sadapathar stones.

ACC Sylhet office deputy director Rafi Md Nazmus Sadat, however, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they had sought permission of the commission for a further detailed investigation into the looting of the stones.

During Friday’s inspection, secretary to the energy and mineral resources ministry Mohammad Saiful Islam was with senior secretary to the public administration ministry Md Mokhlesur Rahman. They were accompanied by Sylhet divisional commissioner Khan Md Reza-un-Nabi, newly appointed Sylhet deputy commissioner Md Sarwoer Alam and district superintendent of police Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman, among others.

Saiful Islam said that work was under way to bring the looted stones back and the stones were also being replaced.

‘Maybe the natural beauty of Sadapathar would not return to its previous state, but the highest efforts are being made to restore it to its previous state,’ he said.

Sarwoer Alam said that the administration would take maximum measures to protect the environment at all tourist spots in the district.

Earlier on August 20, the cabinet division of the government formed a five-member high-level committee to investigate the looting of stones from the Sadapathar tourist spot.

The committee was asked to identify the individuals involved in the looting and submit a report in this regard within 10 days.

According to environment rights activists and local people, more than 20 million cubic feet of stones have been looted from the Sadapathar tourist spot and Jaflong area under Goainghat upazila in the district since the fall of authoritarian regime of the Awami League on August 5 past year in a mass uprising.

About 6.32 lakh cft of the stones looted from Sadapathar has so far been recovered in different drives since August 14.

Local people alleged that unscrupulous people having political connections took advantage of fragile law and order situation in the country after the 2024 political changeover to loot stones and sand from the Sadapathar and Utma Chhara under Companiganj, Jaflong tourist spot at Goainghat, Rangpani tourist spot at Shripur under Jaintapur, Lobha Chhara at Kanaighat upazila and the adjoining areas.

They alleged that the local administration was also responsible.

Bureau of Mineral Resources director general Mohammad Anwarul Habib filed a case with the Companiganj police station against 1,500 unnamed people on August 15 on charge of widespread looting of stones from Sadapathar.
