A group of women demonstrated in front of Ganosamhati Andolan’s office in the capital Dhaka in the afternoon of August 21, protesting against a social media post of the party’s chief coordinator, Zonayed Saki, levelling him ‘misogynist’ and a ‘supporter of homosexuality’.
About nine women held the rally under the banner of the Women’s Rights Protection Community at about 3:00pm.
The group claimed that Saki in a recent Facebook post supported a transgender student Sahara Chowdhury, which was ‘against women’s rights and supported homosexuality’.
On August 16, Saki on his verified Facebook page condemned and protested against mob violence that led to the expulsion of Sahara from the Metropolitan University in Sylhet.
‘This unlawful expulsion order must be withdrawn immediately. The state must ensure the rights, dignity and security of every citizen regardless of religion, class, gender or identity,’ wrote Saki, urging all to become united against mob violence.
Ganosamhati Andolan executive coordinator Abul Hassan Rubel told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that he was at the party office during the group’s demonstration and urged the protesters to come to the party office for a discussion about their allegations, but they did not come.
On August 13, the Metropolitan University authorities expelled Sahara following the posting of two caricatures on a Facebook account named ‘Antarctica Chowdhury’.
