Renowned photographer Nasir Ali Mamun’s month-long photography exhibition ‘Shatabarshe Sultan’ began on Friday at Bengal Shilpalay at Dhanmondi in the capital Dhaka to celebrate legendary artist SM Sultan’s birth centenary.
Bengal Foundation in association with HSBC is organising the show.
The exhibition includes 108 photographs, materials used by SM Sultan and a documentary film by Nasir Ali Mamun, which
gives a glimpse of SM Sultan’s life, works and philosophy.
The exhibition was inaugurated by Bangladesh Bank governor Ahsan H Mansur while convener of the national and international birth centenary celebration committee of SM Sultan artist Monirul Islam, Prothom Alo editor Matiur Rahman, Bengal Group chairman Abul Khair Litu, HSBC chief executive officer Mahbub Ur Rahman and Nasir Ali Mamun spoke at the event moderated by Bengal Foundation director general Luva Nahid Chowdhury.Â
Nasir Ali Mamun said that without the help of HSBC and Bengal Foundation he could not afford this exhibition.
He said, ‘I dream of a museum where all of my photographs will be preserved. In Bangladesh, no one collects artworks, and the government does not know how photographers and artists survive.’
Matiur Rahman said that Nasir Ali Mamun was renowned for his portrait photography and he captured more than 8,000 people mostly famous in art, culture and politics.
Monirul Islam said that Bangladeshi photographers worked with a lot of hurdles due to a lack of technical elements.
Ahsan H Mansur said that SM Sultan was one of the greatest Bangladeshi painters.
The exhibition will remain open till September 27. Â
