The police on Friday recovered the body of senior journalist and columnist Bibhuranjan Sarkar from the Meghna River in Gazaria of Munshiganj.

He remained missing since Thursday.


Kalagachhia River Police outpost in-charge Saleh Ahmed Pathan said that the body was found floating in the river near Kalagachhia at about 3:00pm and, based on initial identification, the body was believed to be that of Bibhuranjan.

‘The police matched it with the photograph of the missing journalist and informed Ramna police about the body recovery,’ he said.

Bibhuranjan’s relatives were on their way to Munshiganj to complete the identification process, added the police official,

Bibhuranjan, 71, worked for Ajker Patrika and contributed regular columns to several media outlets.

He sent his last article to bdnews24.com Thursday morning, noting in a footnote- ‘[You] can publish it as my last piece in life.’

In the article, he wrote about his and his son’s illnesses, financial hardship and other struggles.

Bibhuranjan Sarkar left his Siddheshwari home in Dhaka Thursday morning to go to the Ajker Patrika office in the capital’s Banasree area but did not go there.

He remained missing since then.

Later that night, his son Wreet Sarkar filed a general diary with Ramna police station.
