Bangladesh Rural Development Board organised a workshop on ‘innovative microfinance for rural development: youth power and rural entrepreneurship development’ at the BRDB conference room at Karwrn Bazar in Dhaka on Thursday.

Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, North South University vice-chancellor and chairman of Grameen Bank, attended as chief guest at the workshop, which was presided over by BRDB director general Sarder Md Keramat Ali, said a press release.  


Representatives of various ministries, divisions, departments and agencies were present in the workshop. In addition, directors, joint directors, deputy directors, assistant directors working at BRDB headquarters and officers and employees of district offices and upazila offices participated in the workshop.

BRDB deputy director, planning, Md Ziaul Hasan, presented the keynote at the workshop.

Abdul Hannan Chowdhury said that the development of the country was not possible without rural development. ‘Everyone should work in coordination, motivated by moral education and patriotism.’

He laid emphasis on timely training, research, international cooperation, exchange of experience in the microfinance sector, successful case studies, and implementation of new programmes and use of information technology to accelerate the activities of BRDB.

He also highlighted the multifaceted use of capital through microfinance and the production of diverse products and services, domestic and foreign experiences and innovative activities in partnership with development partners.

Highlighting the issue of human resource development in overall rural development, he also proposed to sign a memorandum of understanding between BRDB and North South University and exchange of experience between BRDB and Grameen Bank officials.

Sarder Keramat Ali said that BRDB conducted various activities to improve the quality of life of the marginalised communities of the country.

Among them, human organisation creation, income-generating training, small and entrepreneurial loan support and intensive supervision, and implementation of small schemes are notable.

He pledged that the BRDB family would fulfil its responsibility with the utmost professionalism in implementing the recommendations of the workshop for poverty alleviation and overall welfare of the country.
