Ferry services on the Paturia-Daulatdia route have been facing disruption for the past few days due to strong current and river erosion in Manikganj, resulting in sufferings of people.

The situation worsened on Thursday as the ferry ghat no 4 was washed away early hours on the day by strong currents and river erosion in the River Padma.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation Aricha office sources said river erosion and currents damaged the ferry ghat at Paturia in Manikganj, forcing the authorities concerned to suspend ferry services on the ghat.

Another two ghats — no 3 and no 5, were partially damaged at Paturia in Manikganj.

BIWTC official Abdus Salam said that three of the five landing stations were washed away.

He said that they were continuing ferry services through the other landing stations which were also under threats of river erosion.

‘On the ghat no 4, we suspended ferry services on Thursday morning to avoid any untoward incident,’ he said.

Local people said that somehow ferries were running on the Paturia-Daulatdia river routs.

During his visit to the ferry ghat, BIWTA executive engineer Nepal Chandra Debnath said that they had taken initiatives to set up a ferry ghat to continue services.

Meanwhile, hundreds of buses and trucks were seen stranded on both sides of the ferry ghat on Thursday.

The passengers’ sufferings mounted for the ferry service disruption on the river route which connects southern and south-western regions of the country.

Some 16 ferries ply the Paturia-Daulatdia route.
