The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority on Wednesday demolished an illegally constructed bungalow of former state minister for power, energy and mineral resources Nasrul Hamid Bipu on the banks of the Buriganga River.

The BIWTA demolished three two-storeyed buildings, 200-foot boundary wall, three semi-brick rooms in the drive, recovering 1.5 acres of foreshore, said a BIWTA press release.

The structures were built on BIWTA-owned land, obstructing the natural flow of the Buriganga River for years.

Security forces, including police, were present during the drive.

The demolition move came amid ongoing legal proceedings against Nasrul Hamid, a former lawmaker of the ousted government of Sheikh Hasina.

聽Nasrul Hamid has gone into hiding after the fall of the Awami League regime on August 5 past year amid a student-led mass uprising.

On January 16, 2025, a Dhaka court banned him and his wife, Seema Hamid, from travelling abroad in an Anti-Corruption Commission case.

The ACC alleged that during his tenure as state minister for power, energy and mineral resources, he abused his authority to help his wife acquire assets worth Tk 6.98 crore.

In February, a Dhaka court passed an order to freeze 20 bank accounts linked to Nasrul Hamid and his wife Seema Hamid.
