A metropolitan magistrate court in Dhaka on Sunday granted bail to rickshaw-puller Azizur Rahman, who was beaten by a mob while trying to pay tribute to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi 32 in Dhaka on August 15, in an attempted murder case related to the July uprising.
The chief adviser’s press wing in a statement on Sunday said that an explanation had been sought from the Dhanmondi police station officer-in-charge, seeking to know on what basis Azizur was arrested as a suspect in a case.
Metropolitan magistrate MA Azharul Islam granted the bail to Azizur, responding to his petition submitted by his lawyer, Farzana Yasmin Rakhi, said the court’s general recording officer, sub-inspector Abul Bashar.
Azizur was beaten by a mob at Dhanmondi 32 on August 15 when he went there with a bouquet of flowers to pay tribute to the country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was assassinated along with most of his family members on August 15, 1975 by a section of army officers.
Police later detained Azizur at the spot while Azizur claimed that he was not involved in any politics, and he just went there to pay his respect to Sheikh Mujib.
On Saturday, a Dhaka court sent Azizur to jail after the police had produced him before the court and sought an order to keep Azizur in jail in the attempt to murder case filed by Md Ariful Islam in April this year.
According to the statement of the case, victim Ariful was leading a procession from New Market to the Science Lab area during the Students Against Discrimination movement on August 4, 2024.
Ariful alleged in the case that he was critically injured when the accused persons opened fire and hurled petrol bombs and hand bombs on the procession.
While producing Azizur before a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court, the police submitted that there was adequate evidence to link Azizur to the case.
The chief adviser’s press wing, in its Sunday statement, said that they had sought an explanation from the Dhanmondi police station officer-in-charge to know on what basis Azizur was arrested as a suspect in a case.
‘The Dhaka Metropolitan Police has taken steps to investigate whether there were any inconsistencies in the police officer’s recent actions and statements,’ said the statement.
An order has also been issued to submit an expeditious report under Section 173(A) of the recently amended Code of Criminal Procedure to complete the investigation into the involvement of Azizur in the case, the statement added.
The metropolitan police said in a statement on Sunday that Azizur was not shown arrested in any murder case.
After his arrest, he was produced before a court on August 16 as a suspect in a case filed with Dhanmondi police station in April, according to a DMP media release signed by Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner for media and public relations.
‘Different social media platforms were found spreading misinformation regarding his arrest and the nature of the case, which has come to the attention of DMP,’ the media release said.
Azizur was produced before a court as a suspect in a regular case under the Penal Code, the release said.
