The High Court on Sunday deferred until October 29 the hearing of a petition filed by former chief justice ABM Khairul Haque seeking to quash a murder case linked to the July 2024 uprising.
The bench of Justice Md Zakir Hossain and Justice KM Rasheduzzaman Raja adjourned the hearing after Khairul’s lawyer, Md Jahangir Hossain, sought more time due to personal difficulties.
Attorney general Md Asaduzzaman did not oppose the adjournment but remarked that the defence had repeatedly delayed proceedings, accusing them of ‘creating confusion’ during court appearances.
Khairul was arrested on July 24, 2025, over the killing of Abdul Quiyyum, a Juba Dal leader, during the July 2024 uprising in Kajla, Dhaka. The murder case was filed much later, on July 6, 2025, nearly a year after the incident.
The case names Khairul along with several hundred leaders of the Awami League, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and AL general secretary Obaidul Quader, alleging their involvement in the violence that led to Quiyyum’s death.
The court had previously deferred the hearing on August 11 following chaos between lawyers affiliated with the Awami League and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.Â
Tensions had flared over a government request to delay the hearing, prompting heated exchanges inside the courtroom.
Ahead of Sunday’s scheduled hearing, security was tightened around the Supreme Court premises. However, no pro-AL lawyers were seen in court during the adjournment proceedings.
On Wednesday, a total of 65 pro-Awami League lawyers, including former law minister Anisul Huq, ex-Dhaka South mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, and former attorney general AM Amin Uddin, were sued in an attempted murder case.
The case, filed with Shahbagh police station by SCBA administrative officer Rabiul Hasan, accused several of these lawyers of leading the violence during 2023 election to Supreme Court Bar Association election.
They are also linked to clashes during the SCBA election held between March 14–16, 2023, where allegations of vote rigging and violence surfaced.
The case also names five police officers, including former Detective Branch chief Harun-or-Rashid and the then Shahbagh OC, for allegedly helping carry out the attacks.
Among the accused, Anisul Huq, AM Amin Uddin, and additional attorney general Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury are already in jail in connection with other cases related to the 2024 July uprising.
