The police arrested a leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student organisation of the Awami League, at Bahadurpur under Sarsha upazila in Jashore, allegedly for arranging a programme to mark the death anniversary of the country鈥檚 founding president, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The arrestee is Mukul Hossain, a former president of the Bahadurpur union unit of Chhatra League. BCL is now a banned organisation.
Benapole port police station officer-in-charge Rasel Mia said that the arrestee was trying to carry out sabotage.
Local people and the police said that the police arrested the BCL leader at Bahadurpur as a number of Awami League activists gathered there to hold a programme marking the death anniversary of Sheikh Mujib.
They said that the other Awami League activists fled the scene, sensing the presence of the police.
OC Rasel Mia said that they produced Mukul before a magistrate court in Jashore, and the court sent him to jail.
