A Bangladesh Army patrol team held two youths, including a leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, with Tk 90,000 they had extorted as ransom from a man at Madhabpur upazila in Habiganj at midnight past Thursday.
The arrested are Jamil Chowdhury, member secretary of Madhabpur upazila JCD, student organisation of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, and his associate Monayem Khan, also a JCD activist, police said.
Local residents said that a group of JCD activists led by Jamil kept Arup Chowdhury confined at a house at Kalikapur village in Baghasura union under the Madhabpur upazila on Thursday night and demanded Tk 1,50,000 as ransom.
According to them, Arup Chowdhury is a resident of Nasir Nagar upazila in Brahmanbaria district and he, along with his wife, came to Madhabpur to attend an event at the home of his relative.
Arup paid Tk 90,000, but the JCD men were claiming that they would not release him until getting the demanded amount, the locals said.
Acting on a secret tip-off, the army team reached the spot at around the midnight and detained Jamil and Monayem there after recovering Tk 90,000 from their possession, they said, adding that other accomplices of the group somehow managed to flee the scene.Â
Madhabpur police station officer-in-charge Shahid Ullah confirmed the arrest to ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· and said that the army team handed the arrestees to the police station on Friday morning.
