Dhaka University pro-vice-chancellor for administration Professor Sayema Haque Bidisha at a seminar on Thursday said that it was the right time to take the country forward by utilising the power of youth.

She made the remark as chief guest at the seminar titled Harnessing the Youth Dividend: Strategic Imperatives for Bangladesh in a Changing World at the Professor Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium, said a press release on Friday.


At the initiative of the DU international relations department, the seminar was organised in collaboration with the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies.

Chaired by Professor ASM Ali Ashraf, chairman of the department of international relations, the Maldives high commissioner to Bangladesh Shiuneen Rasheed, secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Md Mahbub-ul-Alam and BIISS director general Major General Iftekhar Anis attended the seminar as special guests.

Professor Rashed Uz Zaman, department of international relations, conducted the programme while BIISS research director Colonel AHM Yasin Chowdhury proposed the vote of thanks.

Sayema Haque Bidisha said that a large part of population in the country was young.

‘We have seen the courage and strength of these young people in the July mass uprising. It is important to prepare them as skilled human resources in the competitive world,’ she added.

She further said, ‘There is a need for specific policies and strategies in various areas, including education, employment generation, skill development and support for the empowerment of the young population.’

She also mentioned that several plans had been recently taken up at Dhaka University to utilise the potential and strength of the youth.

Shiuneen Rasheed emphasised on the coordination of education with profession in order to develop the youth as skilled human resources.

Teachers, researchers, students and representatives of various organisations presented papers in the three sessions at the seminar.
