
A rickshaw puller was beaten by a mob at Dhanmondi 32 in Dhaka on Friday afternoon while attempting to pay tribute to the country鈥檚 founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on his death anniversary.
The victim Azizur Rahman, 45, a resident of Ghorashal village under Jhenaidah Sadar police station, had come to the area with a bouquet of flowers in hand.
According to police and eyewitnesses, the incident occurred around noon when Azizur attempted to approach the main road, ignoring a the police barricade.
Seeing this, people stationed at the barricade stopped him and questioned his intentions.
During the interrogation, Azizur reportedly stated that he was not affiliated with any political party and had come solely out of respect for Mujib.
However, an argument ensued, and the crowd, growing agitated, physically assaulted him and attempted to force him away.
The police officers on duty quickly intervened, rescued Azizur from the mob, and took him into custody for his safety before helping him leave the area.
Witnesses further said that several individuals, including women, faced harassment throughout the day at Dhanmondi 32 as they came to pay their respects.
The police also confirmed that two people were detained in the area on Thursday night.
