A man was beaten and stabbed to death on the stairs of the second floor of a shisha (flavoured tobacco) bar at Banani in the capital Dhaka early Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Rahat Hossain Rabbi, 31, a resident of Mohakhali in the capital.
Confirming the matter, Banani police station officer-in-charge Md Rasel Sarowar said that Rabbi was attacked at about 4:30am on the stairs of the second floor of the shisha bar named ‘360 Degree’.
Rabbi was descending from the bar when five to six people, led by a suspect identified as Munna, assaulted him, the police official said.
‘Rabbi and the accused often went to the shisha bar. As he was leaving the shisha bar, Rabbi had an argument with four to five other people on the stairs leading to the second floor. At one point, Rabbi was stabbed,’ he said.
Rabbi was taken to Kurmitola General Hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead, the police official said, adding that filing a case in this connection was under way.
‘No arrests have been made over the incident yet, but efforts are under way to identify and apprehend those involved by analysing CCTV footage,’ he added.
A CCTV footage of the incident shows Rabbi in a white shirt surrounded by three people as they were coming down the stairs together.
Suddenly, they stopped and stabbed him multiple times, the footage shows. One of the attackers was also seen hitting Rabbi with an object.
The footage shows Rabbi attempting to move backwards towards the elevator, and one of his attackers could be seen throwing something at him. Then, another attacker came and stabbed Rabbi again near his right elbow before going down the stairs.
