The youth and sports and local government, rural development and cooperatives adviser, Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, has said that he will not be part of the election-time government to avoid conflict of interest as a political figure.
Asif, also a former central leader of the Students Against Discrimination that spearheaded the July uprising to oust the Awami League regime on August 5, 2024, made the comment in an online talk show titled ‘Thikanay Khaled Muhiuddin’ Tuesday evening.
‘I have been involved in politics since 2018. And I will not be in election-time government,’ said Asif, replying to a question from the talk show host.
He said that those directly involved in politics and interested in joining politics should not be in the election-time government.
Such people should resign from the government before the announcement of the election schedule to avoid conflict of interest in the democratic transformation of the country, he said.
‘I should not be in the election-time government, even if I do not participate in the elections,’ said Asif.    Â
He said that he, information and broadcasting adviser Mahfuj Alam and others, if any, involved in politics should not be in the election-time government.
He also hinted that he would do politics at the national level.
‘If I do politics, I will do it at the national level. I will not do politics as a local level leader. For this, Dhaka is a suitable place for me,’ said Asif.       Â
He, however, did not mention the name of the political party he would join before the upcoming national election, likely to be held in February 2026.
Nahid Islam, Asif, and Mahfuj joined the interim government’s advisory council as the representatives of the students who led the July uprising after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League regime on August 5, 2024.
Later, Nahid resigned from the interim government’s advisory council to lead the National Citizen Party, which was formed in February this year by a group of student and youth leaders who led the July uprising.
Nahid, Asif and the top leaders of the NCP were the leaders of the Democratic Student Force during their student life.
