At least 520 people were killed and 1,356 others were injured in 506 road accidents across the country in July, according to a report published by the Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh issued on Tuesday.

A large percentage of people have been killed in motorcycle accidents, which also covers a large percentage of the accidents, during this time, the report notes.


Total 169 people (32.5 per cent of total deaths) were killed and 144 people (10.61 per cent of total injured) were injured in 162 (32.01 per cent) road accidents involving motorcycles.

Additionally, 31 people were killed and 41 others injured in 34 railway accidents.

In 14 waterways accidents, 17 people were killed, 14 injured, and five remained missing.

The association issued a press release summarising their monthly report, which was based on media reports, data collected from the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation, and estimates from the World Health Organisation.

Of the fatalities, 139 were transport workers, including drivers, 90 were pedestrians, 50 were students, nine were political leaders and activists and five were teachers.

Of the fatalities, 56 were children.

Regarding the nature of the accidents, the highest 48.22 per cent were caused when vehicles crushed onto other things. Next comes 26.08 per cent by head-on collisions, 19.96 per cent by vehicles falling into roadside ditches as the drivers lost control of the vehicles, 4.34 per cent by other reasons, 0.79 per cent by collision between trains and other vehicles, and 0.59 per cent by scarves getting entangled into wheels. According to the report, the highest, 40.31 per cent road accidents took place on national highways, followed by 29.24 per cent on regional highways and 24.11 per cent on feeder roads.

Out of total accidents, 4.74 per cent occurred in Dhaka metropolitan city and 0.79 per cent in Chattogram metropolitan city.
