The authorities on Sunday announced that the long-awaited elections to the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union would be held on September 11.
This marks the first such polls in over three decades, though JUCSU elections are meant to be held annually.
JU proctor and JUCSU Election Committee member secretary Professor AKM Rashidul Alam announced the election date at a press conference at the university’s Senate Building in the afternoon.
Besides the announcement of the election schedule, the authorities released the draft voter list and election code of conduct on Sunday.
Professor Md Moniruzzaman of the English department of the university will serve as the JUCSU chief election commissioner.
According to the schedule, nomination papers for interested candidates will be distributed on August 18 and August 19. The candidates will be able to submit the nomination papers on the same days.
After scrutiny, the draft list of candidates will be published on August 25, and the final list of candidates will be published on August 29.
The candidates will be allowed to campaign between August 29 and September 9.
JUCSU was established in 1972, and the first JUCSU election was held in the same year.
The last election took place in 1992, leaving the central students’ body dormant for nearly 33 years.
Calls for the revival of JUCSU intensified after the 2024 student-led mass uprising that ousted the Awami League regime.
The university’s students held protests, rallies, hunger strikes, and human chains on campus, demanding the restoration of their 5-member representation from the central students’ union at the 93-member JU senate.
Previously, the university authorities had announced May 31 and later July 31 as election dates, but the elections were deferred due to tensions on the campus and demands for constitutional reform.
The elections to the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union are scheduled to be held on September 9, and the elections to the Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union are scheduled to be held on September 15.
