Bangladesh Nationalist Party acting chairman Tarique Rahman on Sunday urged the party leaders and activists to earn people’s trust and confidence ahead of the upcoming general election.

He made the remarks while virtually addressing Rajshahi city BNP’s bi-annual conference, held after 15 years.

‘We have many challenges ahead. We have to face these challenges by earning the trust of the people.

For that, we all need to be united. For that, we also need to be disciplined,’ he said.

He said that he was confident that the majority of the country’s people would support the sheaf of paddy, the electoral symbol of the BNP, in the upcoming national election.

He said that winning the election would just be the beginning, with numerous challenges waiting thereafter.

Tarique criticised the damage caused by the ousted Awami League to key national institutions.

Sectors like health, education, judiciary, economy, and law enforcement were severely damaged by the previous regime, he said.

He pledged to give priority to these sectors if BNP was voted to power.

The BNP leader said that the Padma River was drying up because of the Farakka Barrage, which was causing the land around it to turn into a desert.

He stressed the need to ensure the country’s fair share of water, even if that needed to go to international courts.

Calling for discipline and unity within the party, he said that the party leaders and activists must come together, disciplined and united, to honour the trust the people had kept in the BNP.

Tarique hoped that he would meet the people in person very soon.

Presided over by Rajshahi city BNP convener Ershad Ali Esha, the conference was addressed, among others, by BNP chairperson’s advisers Abdus Salam and Mizanur Rahman Minu, forest and environment affairs secretary Mohammad Mosaddeque Hossain Bulbul, relief and rehabilitation affairs assistant secretary Shafiqul Haque Milon, and Rajshahi divisional organising secretary Shaheen Shawkat.
