
Director general of the Department of Fisheries Md Abdur Rouf in Patuakhali on Saturday said that the government had taken steps to ensure a sustainable fish harvesting from the sea for the sake of future generations.
 ‘A list has been sent to the shipping ministry to prevent river-filling and their pollution and carrying out river-dredging, which is underway on priority basis … The Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute has been instructed to identify submerged reefs,’ he said at an exchange of views at the BFDC Fisheries Landing Centre.
Noting that a year-round campaign will be launched against the use of illegal trawlers, catching small fishes and fishing during the banned time, he said, ‘If the use of illegal trawlers are stopped, fish production in the sea will increase subsequently.’
In this connection, research is underway to harvest tuna fish from the deep sea, he mentioned.
The DG said that pragmatic steps had been taken to increase VGF assistance for fishermen and discussions were underway on adjusting Indian fishermen’s fishing schedule in the sea.
Barisal division’s director Md Alfaz Uddin Sheikh presided over the meeting.
Among others, joint secretary Md Abu Nayem Muhammad Abdus Sabur, Coast Guard commander Captain Imam Hasan Azad, additional superintendent of police Mohammad Sajedul Islam Sajal and deputy director of the local government division Jewel Rana were present on the occasion.
Later, the equipment of 28 illegal trawlers were voluntarily removed.
