A private car driver was found dead with his throat slit beside his vehicle on the Lalpur–Bonpara road in Natore’s Lalpur upazila on Thursday night.

The victim was identified as Saidur Rahman, 35, son of Altaf Hossain of Bamonpara village under Veramara South Railgate area in Kushtia’s Veramara upazila.

The vehicle was found there about 10:00pm near North Bengal Sugar Mills High School at Gopalpur, just about 10 metres from Gopalpur rail gate.

The police have detained a man who was inside the car at the time of the attack for questioning.  The identity of the detained has not been revealed.

According to witnesses, a white private car was spotted parked by the roadside with blood on its door.

When they approached, they found the driver’s body and a blood-stained knife lying on the road beside the vehicle.

‘The man’s throat was cut and his head and face were covered in blood. There were bloodstains on the car as well,’ said witness Sohag Hossain, adding that there were very few people in the crime scene due to heavy rain at that time.

Lalpur police officer-in-charge Mominuzzaman said that initial findings suggested that Saidur had travelled from Veramara to Bonpara with passengers and was attacked on the return journey.

‘We are questioning the detained passenger and multiple police teams are working in the field to identify and apprehend others involved,’ the OC said.
