The government has no monitoring on the foreign teachers or officials working at different English medium schools in the country.

The majority of the foreigners working at the English medium schools are Indian nationals, according to sources.

In the 2017 rules issued under Registration of Private Schools Ordinance, 1962, there are no rules regarding the nationality of teachers, employees and managing committee members of private schools.

Education ministry officials said that they did not monitor these schools to see how many foreign teachers and other staff were in these schools at present.

According to the web sites of different schools and LinkedIn profiles of several teachers, a number of foreign nationals, mostly Indian, are working at different English medium schools in the country.

The Aga Khan Academy Dhaka’s head of academy Suvina Shunglu, diploma programme coordinator Usha Kasana, middle years programme coordinator Ira Srivastav and theory of knowledge coordinator Jina Saha are Indians as per their LinkedIn profiles.

Australian International School diploma programme coordinator Ponny Chacko, Canadian International School coordinator Sona Amit Guha and Heritage School - Bangladesh principal Pratik Tarafdar are also Indian national as per their LinkedIn profiles.

Desk officials of the Glenrich International School said that their Uttara campus principal Amlan K Saha is an Indian national.

Their former director of academics CS Shivananda, who retired recently, was also from India, the officials added.

The 2017 rules have a separate section for the formation of the managing committee and appointment of the teachers and employees in the private schools.

In the categories of eligibility of teachers and employees, there is mention of the academic, training and experience-related eligibilities.

Officials of the Secondary and Higher Education Division under the education ministry said that there was no bar on the foreigners from working at these schools.

The division additional secretary (secondary wing-2), Md Mijanur Rahman, said that they did not work to find out how many foreigners were working at the English medium schools in the country.

Replying to a question, he said that he was not aware of any monitoring in place on foreign teachers or employees at these schools.

‘But there should be some monitoring on them,’ Mijanur said, adding, ‘I will look into the matter.’

According to the Bangladesh Education Statistics 2023, there were 28,013 students and 5,873 teachers at 123 English medium schools in the country.
