Bangladesh Nationalist Party standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed on Thursday said that his party could form an election alliance before the election schedule with any political parties who were with them in the movement against the fascist regime of Sheikh Hasina.

He, however, said that the BNP was yet to finalise the matter.

Salahuddin made the comment while speaking with journalists at his residence in the capital.

About the reform initiatives, he said that the interim government could go ahead with reforms on national consensus except the constitutional reforms.

‘Except the constitutional reforms, the interim government can do all the proposed reforms independently,’ said Salahuddin.

Responding to a question regarding the July Charter and reforms, he said that the BNP was committed to the reforms and the national consensus-based charter, signed by political parties, would be a commitment to the nation.

He mentioned that the law ministry was passing ordinances regularly, which were parts of the proposed reforms.

Some reforms proposals are not subject to issuing ordinances as those can be implemented through executive orders, he added.

The constitutional reforms will be implemented by the next parliament, he stated.

Referring to interim government chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus’ address to the nation on Tuesday and the July Declaration, Salahuddin said that both mentioned that the reforms, endorsed by a national consensus-based charter, would be implemented by the next parliament.

‘We welcome this. Because, this is the only legitimate, legal and constitutional process to amend the constitution,’ he stated.

He also mentioned that some political parties were demanding legal basis of the charter and an immediate implementation of the reforms.

If invited, the BNP would participate in discussions on finding alternative legitimate ways for adopting all the reforms under the country’s constitution, Salahuddin said.

Responding to a question regarding the BNP’s meetings with other political parties before the elections, Salahuddin answered that the party wanted to create an environment where political parties with different philosophies could remain united in national interest.

Responding to another question about an evaluation of the one year of the interim government, he said  that people of the country, including their party, expected more from the government but it could not meet the expectations for various limitations.

Salahuddin stated that the Bangladesh Army would play an important role in the national election as the army was planning to deploy about 1,00,000 members during the election following the government’s request.
