The Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Wednesday night took Sumaiya Jafrin, wife of a major of the Bangladesh Army, into custody in connection with a secret meeting held in the capital’s Bashundhara area with Awami League members on 8 July.

A joint commissioner of the detective police, Mohammad Nasirul Islam, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that she was detained from a restaurant in the Mirpur DOHS area in Dhaka after her link to the meeting was established.

Sumaiya is the wife of Major Sadikul Islam Sadek, who has already been in custody on similar charges.

‘She was taken into DB custody at around 8:00pm on Wednesday. We are interrogating her,’ Nasirul Islam added.

The Bangladesh Army has formed a court of inquiry against an army officer over allegations of political involvement. A preliminary investigation has found the allegations to be true, according to a press release issued by the Inter Services Public Relations Directorate on Friday.

At a press briefing held at the Officers’ Mess in Dhaka Cantonment on 31 July, the army stated that Major Sadikul Islam Sadek had been taken into custody over allegations of training Awami League members.

According to the DMP, 26 individuals were arrested in connection with the meeting—22 by the DMP and four others in different districts.

A case was filed with Bhatara Police Station in Dhaka on 13 July regarding the incident.

On 12 May, the interim government imposed a ban on all activities of the Awami League and its affiliated, allied, and like-minded organisations until the completion of trials by the International Crimes Tribunal regarding alleged atrocities committed by ousted Awami League regime during the July uprising last year.

The interim government, led by Professor Muhammad Yunus, assumed office on 8 August 2024, three days after the ouster of the Awami League-led authoritarian regime in a student-led mass uprising.

The chief of the Awami League and former prime minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, fled to India on 5 August last year amid the mass uprising.
