Jahangirnagar University authorities have permanently expelled 64 current students and revoked the academic certificates of 73 former students for their involvement in last year鈥檚 violent attack on teachers and students during an anti-discrimination movement on the campus.
The decision was announced in the early hours of Tuesday, following a Syndicate meeting held late Monday night.
Addressing a press briefing at 3:30am, university vice-chancellor Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan disclosed the final decision against the accused.
According to the vice-chancellor, 229 individuals, of them 130 current students and 99 alumni, were accused in connection with the July 2024 attack.
Of the 130 current students, 64 have been expelled for life, 37 suspended for two years, eight for one year, and one for six months.
Meanwhile, 20 students have been acquitted due to lack of evidence.
Among the 99 former students, 73 have had their certificates permanently cancelled, while six certificates have been suspended for two years.
Another 20 former students were acquitted following an investigation.
According to the campus sources, all of the expelled students were members of the recently banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of Bangladesh Awami League.
Professor Kamrul Ahsan also stated that the university would forward the full investigation report to the International Crimes Tribunal for further legal proceedings.
On August 5, 2024, a historic student-led mass uprising brought an end to the autocratic regime of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina who fled to India.
