The Anti-Corruption Commission on Monday filed a case against eight people, including former chief justice ABM Khairul Haque, over allegations of corruption and irregularities in allotting a plot of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha.
The commission at its meeting on the day took the decision to file the case, said its director general (prevention) Md Akhtar Hossain.
The other accused in the case are all former Rajuk officials鈥攆ormer Rajuk chairman Md Nurul Huda and former members AIM Golam Kibria, Md Abu Bakkar Sikder, Md Anwarul Islam Sikder, Akhtar Hossain Bhuiyan, M Mahbubul Alam and Nazmul Hai.
According to the ACC inquiry report, Khairul Haque, while serving as the chief justice鈥攁 constitutional post and a top-ranking public servant鈥攁llegedly abused his position by submitting a false affidavit to acquire a government-allotted plot in Purbachal.
Concealing that he owned a six-storey house on NAEM Road in the capital鈥檚 Dhanmondi, Khairul Haque applied for a plot at the address of Sector 1, Road 102, plot 004 under the Purbachal Residential Project.
Khairul Haque, along with the Rajuk, deliberately violated legal procedures and conspired to unlawfully gain benefits through having the plot allotted in his name.
He was the country鈥檚 19th chief justice in office from September 30, 2010 to May 17, 2011.
On July 23, 2013, he was appointed chairman of the Law Commission for a three-year term. After the term ended, he was reappointed multiple times.
Khairul Haque resigned from the post on 13 August 2024 following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League regime.
On July 24, this year, a team of the Detective Branch of the police arrested Khairul from his residence in the capital鈥檚 Dhanmondi. He is now on a seven-day remand in a case filed over manipulating the Supreme Court verdict on the caretaker government system.
