A Dhaka court on Saturday granted a four-day remand to expelled leader of Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad Jan e Alam Apu alias Kazi Gaurab in the much-talked-about extortion case filed with the Gulshan police.

Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Nazmin Akter issued the order after the investigating officer of the case and Gulshan police inspector (investigation) Muklesur Rahman produced Jan e Alam with a 10-day remand plea.

Meanwhile, the police recovered Jane Alam鈥檚 motorcycle, which he recently bought allegedly with the extortion money, from a house in Mohammadpur on August 1, said a Dhaka Metropolitan Police press release issued on Saturday.

The release revealed that Jan e Alam admitted to buying the motorcycle with his share of the Tk 10 lakh extorted from Siddique Abu Zafar, husband of Shammi Ahmed, the international affairs secretary of Awami League, on July 17.

Earlier on August 1, the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Jan e Alam.

Four other accused are also currently on police remand.

They are Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad鈥檚 expelled leader Abdur Razzaque Bin Solaiman Riyad, Student Against Discrimination鈥檚 expelled Dhaka north city convener Md Ibrahim Hossain Munna, and expelled members Md Sadkaun Siam and Sadman Sadab.

Their expulsions were made from their posts after the extortion case was filed.

According to the police, five individuals were caught red-handed, while Jan e Alam fled the scene at Gulshan on July 26 when they were allegedly collecting extortion money from Shammi鈥檚 husband, identifying themselves as Students Against Discrimination coordinators.

The Students Against Discrimination spearheaded the 2024 July uprising that ousted the authoritarian Awami League regime on August 5, 2024.

The victim, Siddique Abu Zafar, filed the case with the Gulshan police early Sunday, accusing six identified and 10 or 12 unidentified people.
