
Politicians, academics and professionals on Saturday called on the political parties to continue their movements to ensure for Bangladesh a fair share of water of the common rivers with India.
They made the call at the publication ceremony of a commemorative book on Atiqur Rahman Salu, former chairman of the International Farakka Committee, Bangladesh.
The Farakka committee organised the publication ceremony of former chairman of IFC, New York Atiqur Rahman Salu who died past year in the United States.
The Farakka committee is an organisation focused on water-related issues between India and Bangladesh, particularly those stemming from the Farakka Barrage.
Jatiya Party faction chairman Mostafa Jamal Haider urged the political parties to continue their movements for ensuring justified amount of water for Bangladesh of the 54 common rivers flowing between Bangladesh and India.
Special assistant to chief adviser Anisuzzaman Chowdhury said that Atiqur Rahman Salu was a follower of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani who tried to establish justified water sharing for Bangladesh regarding the common rivers between Bangladesh and India.
Chaired by Syed Tipu Sultan, chairman of the Farakka committee, New York, academics Jasim Uddin Ahmed, wife of Atiqur Rahman Salu and publisher of the commemorative book Farida Yusfzai, editor of the book Quamrul Huda, International Farakka Committee, Bangladesh leaders Gias Ahmed, Sheih Firoz Ahmed and Rafiqul Islam Azad, among others, spoke at the programme.
The Farakka committee Dhaka president, Mostafa Kamal Majumder, conducted the programme.
Dhaka University professor emeritus Serajul Islam Choudhury has written the forward for the book in which 30 articles on Atiqur Rahman Salu was published.
