The police is yet to arrest another accused Kazi Gaurab Apu in the past two days, who fled from the scene when they arrested five individuals caught red handed from the house of Shammi Ahmed, the international affairs secretary of Awami League, while collecting extortion money on Saturday evening.

Gulshan police inspector Moklesur Rahman, also the investigating officer of the case, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they were yet to arrest him and could not identify his political affiliation.

‘We could not say anything right now about the investigation as we have started interrogating the accused,’ he added.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police additional commissioner for crime and operations SM Md Nazrul Islam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the accused took the police members to the house by saying that there was an absconding accused in a July uprising related murder case.

‘But the police did not find any accused in the house and left. The following day on July 17, the extortionists again went to the house and took the extortion money,’ he said.

Students Against Discrimination’s Dhaka north city convener Md Ibrahim Hossain Munna, 24, and members Md Sadkaun Siam, 22, and Sadman Sadab, 21, and Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad leader Abdur Razzaque Bin Solaiman Riyad, 23, were placed on a seven-day remand on Sunday.

The victim, Siddique Abu Zafar, filed a case with the Gulshan police early Sunday naming six and 10–12 unnamed people.

SAD’s former spokesperson Umama Fatema, meanwhile, in a live broadcast on her verified Facebook account on Sunday night alleged that the July movement had been turned into a ‘money-making machine’.

According to the case statement, Razzaque and Gaurab asked Siddique Abu Zafar to pay Tk 50 lakh in extortion and collected Tk 10 lakh of the amount earlier.

As the plaintiff refused to pay the rest of the amount, the extortionists threatened him, saying that they would hand him over to the police by tagging him as a collaborator of the fascists, the plaintiff said in the case statement.

The offenders went to the Gulshan house again at about 5:30pm on Saturday and demanded the remaining amount of Tk 40 lakh in extortion, it added.
