Border Guard Bangladesh on Saturday detained 11 people, including a broker, on charge of illegally entering the country from India through a border point at Baralekha upazila in Moulvibazar.

BGB-52 Battalion commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Ariful Haque Chowdhury confirmed the detention of 11 people.

He said that the BGB personnel of New Pallatal outpost at the Baralekha upazila detained 10 people, including 3 men, 3 women and 4 children, at around 7:10am immediately after they entered into Bangladesh territory from the India through Batamoral Panpunji border point at the upazila.

‘The BGB personnel also detained a Bangladeshi man at that time on charge of assisting the other detainees to enter into Bangladesh illegally,’ the BGB officer said.

Lieutenant Colonel Ariful said that the detainees admitted in the primary interrogation that they are the residents of Bedepalli, a village of gypsy people, in Sunamganj and they had gone to India about six months ago through a border of Moulvibazar district in search of jobs.

He said that in the wake of the recent drive to evict illegal immigrants from India, they decided to return to Bangladesh.

‘In this circumstance, they illegally entered Bangladesh early Saturday with the help of brokers in exchange of money,’ the BGB officer said quoting the detainees.

He said that the detainees were handed over to Baralekha police station in the afternoon for taking legal steps against them.

Baralekha police station officer-in-charge Abul Kashem Sarker told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· in the evening that preparation was underway to take legal steps against the detained people.
