Dhaka University world religions and culture department professor Mohammad Jahangir Alam died of cardiac arrest while returning home after attending an international conference at the Kunming Airport in China on Wednesday.

He was 48, said a DU press release on Thursday.


Professor Jahangir had travelled to South Korea on July 17 to attend the 7th annual conference of the Daesoon Academy of Sciences, following an invitation from the institution.

DU pro-vice-chancellor for administration Professor Sayema Haque Bidisha expressed deep shock at the sudden demise of the professor.

In a condolence message, she said that Professor Jahangir was a humble, well-mannered and kind-hearted person.

‘His death is a great loss for the nation, as we have lost a distinguished teacher and researcher.’ she said, praying for the salvation of the departed soul and extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
