At least five Rohingya people of a family came back to Bangladesh on Thursday, a few days after their spontaneous return to Myanmar鈥檚 Rakhine State.
Office of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner officials said that this was the first such case of return of Rohingyas after they had gone back to Myanmar.
Those came back are Mohammed Zubair, 42, Tefura, 38, Zahidur Rahmam, 13, Romiya Bagum, and Mohammed Rohan. They were being kept under the聽 custody of the Border Guard Bangladesh.
Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Mohammed Mizanur Rahman said that the return of this family was a testimony to the fact that the torture and oppression on Rohingyas that started in 2017 still continued.
There are no official data of how many Rohingyas returned spontaneously to Myanmar from Bangladesh.
More than 13 lakh Myanmar nationals of the Rohingya community have so far fled to Bangladesh amid brutal atrocities by the Myanmar military since 2017, according to government data.
On April 4, 2025, Myanmar officially confirmed that it had verified 1,80,000 Rohingya refugees as eligible for repatriation to Myanmar. These names came from a Bangladesh-submitted list of approximately 8,00,000 refugees assembled between 2018 and 2020.
According to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees data, at least 82 Rohingya have returned voluntarily to Myanmar since mid鈥慚ay 2025 in the first known instance after the 2017 exodus.
