At least 29 people fell victim to extrajudicial killings from August 9, 2024, to June 30, 2025, under the interim government, with eight people encountering such killings between April and June.

This was revealed in a report launched by human rights organisation Odhikar on July 24.


The interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus assumed office on August 8, 2024, three days after the ouster of authoritarian Awami League regime in a mass uprising.

Of the 29 victims of extrajudicial killings, 13 were killed by gunfire, 11 were tortured to death while five were beaten to death, the Odhikar data showed.

Of the eight victims between April and June, five were allegedly killed by the police, one by the Rapid Action Battalion, one by the Bangladesh Coast Guard聽 and one by the joint forces.

Of the victims, two were reportedly tortured to death, five were killed by gunfire and one was beaten to death.

鈥業n an effort to reinforce law and order, the interim government deployed 鈥渏oint forces鈥 composed of multiple security agencies. However, despite this initiative, reports continue to surface, implicating law enforcement personnel in serious acts of misconduct, including acts of torture and extrajudicial killings,鈥 the Odhikar said in its April鈥揓une 2025 quarterly report.

At least 22 people were killed in jail custody between April and June, increasing the number to 61 in the 11 months of the interim government, according to the report by the rights body.

It also said that at least 25 Bangladeshis were killed in gunfire by the Indian Border Security Force between August 2024 and June 2025, with nine killed between April and June.

In the period, at least 1,783 people were pushed into Bangladesh through different border points by India.

The report said that 72 were killed in political violence between April and June, taking the toll to 233 in 11 months (August and June) of the interim government.

At least 488 girls and women were raped between August past year and June 2025, with 208 between April and June.

At least 108 individuals were beaten to death in the 11 months till June, with 19 killed between April and June.
