At least three individuals were killed and two others injured in lightning strikes in Sylhet, Naogaon and Sherpur districts on Thursday.

In Sylhet, a schoolboy was killed in a lightning strike at Kurihai village of Purba Alirgaon union under Gowainghat upazila of the district in the morning.


The deceased is Jamil Ahmed Nabil, 14, son of Jalal Uddin of the village and a class nine student of Alirgaon High School.

Nabil went to their family firm land near his house to help others.

Lightning followed by a rainstorm hit Nabil at 7.30am when he was working the firm land, said Tofail Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Gowainghat police station.

Injured Nabil was taken to a local hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

A farmer was killed and two others were injured in lightning strike at Paschim Patichara field under Patnitala upazila of Naogaon in the morning.

The deceased is Swadhin Islam, 25, son of Rahman Sonar of the same area.

The thunderbolt struck Swadhin at around 11:00am while he took shelter a nearby house of his farmland after the rain started.

The injured were taken to a local hospital, where on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Patnitala police station OC Shah Md Enayetur Rahman confirmed the matter.

Meanwhile, a youth was killed in a lightning strike in Mozakanda area of Palashkandi village under Nakla upazila of Sherpur in the morning.

The deceased is Md Sujan Mia, 20, son of Faizal Mia, a resident of the same area.

Lightning followed by a rainstorm hit Sujan at around 7:00am when he was working in his firm land.

He died on the spot, said Habibur Rahman, Nakla police station OC.
